Start with “Serving Size,” not the front label

A bottle can advertise 60 capsules while requiring two, three or four capsules per serving. Compare formulas per serving, not per capsule and not by the largest number on the front of the package.

Extract ratio

A 100:1 extract describes a concentration relationship used in processing; it is not the same thing as saying the extract is standardized to a particular active compound. “10 mg of 100:1 extract equivalent to 1,000 mg root” and “1,000 mg standardized extract” are very different statements.

Standardization

When a botanical is standardized, the label may state a percentage or amount of a marker compound. That can make comparison more informative, but it still does not guarantee a clinical outcome.

Other ingredients

Capsule materials, flow agents and fillers matter for allergies, preferences and tolerability even though they are not usually the focus of marketing.
